The BHS CLASS OF 1959 WILL BE CELEBRATING THEIR 50TH CLASS REUNION ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2009 AT THE OLD BENSON HIGH SCHOOL. PLAN TO ATTEND!!

I have to be fair -The girls were not the only ones to get misplaced-so did myself,Terry,Larry,and Phil L -Mr KKK told us ALL to stay together and not wander off-But we did two blocks down from Oleander ..we could see the group and the band activity bus pull up to load everyone -but we were two blocks down the street and we DID try to go back to get on the bus-but here came the float with Patricia Blair and 9 year old Darby Hinton of DANIEL BOONE tv show who were the grand marshalls -when that float turned down the street between us and the bus so did half of Wilmington it seemed-try going thru a crowd similar to the state fair midway on Friday night and you will know what I am talking about - according to Cam B and Dempsey who were dispatched to find us we were told not to say anyghing to Mr KKK who was busy making a handing rope when we showed up..I can still see his very irate face sitting next to Mrs Ellis and the others who wanted to kill us too cause we were the reason we did not go to Orton plantation Gardens to eat our picnic lunches-I can still hear Randy E say" Gary that was stupid" And it surely was-Seventh graders dont think clearly sometimes-but at the mule days concert on Sunday afternoon We were the only ones there-the others were riding around on the street- Phil Terry Larry and I along with the other 7th and 8th graders were too scared NOT to be there cause Mr KK COULD be mean If you did anything to mess up-to be honest we were scared to death of him but he is to this day a very fine man-who helped a lot of us to better citizens as well as musicians-too bad we were bad children then

Dee Britt Jo Foster Sharon Smith Beth Denning -these girls all hung together -got lost together -and not just at the beach several other times too-women they are never on time G S Moore thats right I didn't go on the trip-but I remember the experience-cause thats all anybody talked about for days after the trip

A band Trip

I will always remember a band trip to Wilmington. We conned Mr. Killebrew into taking all of us to Carolina beach after the parade. It was early spring, so there wasn't much going on there, but who cared?...we were kids at the beach. Since I had relatives that lived at Carolina beach, my mom and 3 brothers drove down to watch the parade and then go to visit my great aunt. Dempsey Wood and myself decided to stay with my mom and ride back with her.

Mr. Killebrew told us we all had to be back at the bus by 3pm for the ride home. NO EXCEPTIONS. Well, when 3pm came, the bus pulled out without 4 of the gals who were color guards I think. They showed up about 10 minutes after the bus left. The expression on their faces when they saw that the bus was gone I will always rember. When they saw me and my family, they were so relieved. We all piled in the car and drove over to my Aunts house to let the girls call home so their parents wouldn't be worried when they didn't come home on the bus.

The best part was the ride home...my mom and 3 little brothers in the front seat of that 1960 Chevrolet. Dempsey Wood, myself and 4 girls in the back seat all the way from Carolina beach. I understand Mr. Killebrew got into a little trouble for that one, but though he doesn't know it, Dempsey and I have thanked him over and over again. Just wish I could remember after all these years who the 4 girls were.

consider(if you have not already) a souvenir photo book of all the people taken at random at all the events for sale of course and a dvd possibly as a memento of this occasion to remember in the years to come..you could sell it from this website .based on the people coming to these events I think it would sell

I Remember;

Riding the BUS for 12 years

Sex Education 101 on the back seat

Denning road where we picked up Possum (Roy Wood Denning), & his sister then on to Beth Denning's house (she was much younger) 5th or 6th grade, then around the corner and on to Benson.

Stacy Norris, Robert S. Denning, Lennis Lee and myself skipping school to attend the State Fair (Several times)

Williams Lake and my first car wreck, not long after I got my license.

When it was OK to call Shirley Miller, Mousey.

Morning breaks in the up stairs hall way having a 10 cent ice cream sandwich

Bobby Lee, Kenny Wood & Billy Pope with duck tails

Making it through school because I didn't want to disappoint Mr Robert D. Warren

English with Ms Lambert

Standing around the smoking barrel on the East side of the building

The year Danny Royster was injured

Going to W T 's house and he thought it was great fun to sick his German Shepard on us

Being envious of Jerry Neal Creech because he had a pony

Attending FFA functions all over the County and State

When Mr WJ Barefoot would visit our church near Angier and would preach.

When we started school after Labor Day and had half days(Farmers Days) until 1 Oct because the majority of kids came from the farm areas, school was still out before 1 June

The time Mr Barefoot fell off the stage as school was dismissed for the storm ( Hazel, I think)

Double dating with Lennis Lee (He had a car, I had a pickup) many times

Triple dating with Lennis, Pervis and three lucky girls.

Sneaking into the drive in movies, Star View and Cotton Bowl, In the trunk with Shirley

Finally going STEADY with my future wife

Remember the teenage club at the American Legion building? They had a jukebox that seemed to play only one song: Sea Cruise by Frankie Ford. That's where some of us danced for the first time.

Mr. Bostic's American Government

Whenever we elect a new president I always remember when Mr. Bostic showed us his newly hung portrait of John F. Kennedy on the wall in his classroom. He said, "Look at him, a young man. Take a good look and then look at him again when he leaves office. You will be amazed at how much older he looks." That was 1961.

Well, Marilyn, maybe we need to get together and "log" our memories into a book! Yes! I remember Miss Erselle Langdon and the creaky courtroom stairs. She was a bit strange, but she really motivated me to read. I remember that she would often point me to an author and then I'd read everything he/she had written. I'm not sure who, if any one of us knows exactly what happened to her. The saddest thing in the world for me is to think about all those people who have gone before us, made such a difference in our lives, and then become just a casual memory or worse, they are forgotten. I hope I have lived my life in such a way (good and/or bad) that I will be remembered!

I remember telling my dad that I couldn't wait to leave Benson and that I wouldn't be moving back! When he passed away at age 46, I was in my senior year of college. It wasn't long before I returned to Benson to be nearer my family, and haven't left again. I'm still teaching and meeting former students now as parents and older friends as grandparents! My dad would be surprised I think, but then, "never say never!"

My older sister, Diane, actually broke Miss Pansy Gaitley's arm! That used to sound so scary and awesome at the same time to me. She took her class (3rd grade?) out to recess and was playing Red Rover with them. "Red Rover, Red Rover, send Diane right over." Diane was small and so was Miss Gaitley, so she chose to break there. And break she did. (Don't you just love the name Pansy?)

I recall being in Mrs. Louise Vann's 3rd grade with you, Teresa. She had you read all of Charlotte's Web to the class every day after lunch, a chapter a day. I was amazed that you could stand up for that long. You held the book and twisted at your eyelashes and shifted from one foot to the other the whole time. (I loved her daughters names: Honey and Robin.)

Remember the fad of pulling loops off the back of button down oxford shirts? My sister Martha, and Connie Sue, and maybe Peaches all got in trouble for that at recess one day with Mrs. Vivian Buffalo Bailey. She was scary, but I worked hard for her. She once gave me a silver dollar for being the only one in class who had memorized all of A Child's Creed the first day it was assigned; it was a very long piece of prose.

Anyone remember Mrs. Ersell (sp?) in the town library, up those creaky courthouse steps?
