My sister, Gloria, was beautiful, inside and out. She was a true beauty with sparkling brown eyes and a big smile with dimples in her cheeks.

Born October 20, 1943, Gloria was a sensitive, and a genuinely sweet and good person. She always sought to believe the best in others and to treat them kindly.
She was unselfish and honest.

Our childhood was filled with lots of fun and laughter. There are many memories of the times in the 1950's of Gloria and I playing with Joyce Pearce, our neighbor. We loved jumping rope, hopscotch, card games, and monopoly. Tap dancing on the kitchen floor was one of Gloria's favorites.

As a young girl she became very involved in Girl Scouts
and also GA's from the Baptist church, excelling with the highest honors possible.

After high school graduation, she went to Meredith College in Raleigh and majored in Religion and Elementary Education. She became an elementary school teacher.
Even though she never married and never had a child, she loved her little students as if they were her own.

She was a Christian and loved Christ. To me, that is the greatest and most important of all her other attributes.

On April 1, 1978 Gloria passed away in an accidental drowning. She was so young at 34. Our family was devastated. I lost my sister, the one who cheered me on, and who loved me unconditionally. She was one who was genuine, kind, and good deep down inside. I still miss Gloria, her love, and her beautiful smile.

Maurilla,
That was a beautiful tribute to your sister. I know it was very difficult for you to write. Camille, especially, and I were always very close to Gloria. One of her greatest desires was to do what we know today as praise and worship dance. She would have enjoyed this era's openness to that. I love to watch my daughter-in-law and the dance company she was a part of do a whole concert of praise and worship dance.
As an adult, Gloria often visited my parents, even though we were not at home. She was very much loved and appreciated by our whole family. I know what it is to miss a sister who died much too young.
