Gary Blackmon - Class Of 1968

Gary Douglas Blackmon, a 1968 graduate of Benson High School died March 24, 2006. He was head basketball coach for the girls team at South Johnston. He died suddenly at age 56.

Gary Douglas Blackmon, 56, of 801 Stanley St., Four Oaks, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. He was born Feb. 3, 1950, in Johnston County. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Blackmon; and a grandson, Lucas Daniel Jackson.


Mr. Blackmon was a teacher, and head girls’ varsity basketball and softball coach at South Johnston High School. He was active in the SJHS football program and served in many capacities. Mr. Blackmon also helped coach the Benson American Legion Post 109 baseball teams. He enjoyed serving on the Official Chain Crew for the N.C. State football games.


Mr. Blackmon was a member of the First Baptist Church of Four Oaks. He was a 1968 graduate of Benson High School, attended East Carolina University and graduated from Fayetteville State University in 1993 with a degree in secondary education. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at South Johnston High School gymnasium by the Rev. John Norman. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.


Survivors include his wife, Debbie Evans Blackmon; daughters, Tally B. Jackson and husband Greg, and Alison Blackmon of the home; a sister, Sharon B. Strickland and husband Floyd of Benson; and a brother, Frank Blackmon and wife Pat of Oak Island.

Jean Raynor (Lee) (1969)

Gary was a great guy. I remember riding the same bus with him and he was very nice. I'm sure he is missed by many and I want to especially remember him at our 2009 Class Reunion.
